What is Modbus and How Does it Work?

In the Master/Slave Modbus protocol, data is organized and transmitted in tables, where only
the Master device (the gateway) initiates requests for data from Slave devices (such as Sepehr
environmental sensors). Consequently, Slave devices cannot transmit data independently
without explicit permission from the Master. The most widely used types of this protocol are
Modbus RTU and TCP, where a single Master gateway communicates with multiple Slave devices
configured in a bus topology network. In this arrangement, each device is connected
sequentially to its two adjacent devices, except for the devices positioned at the beginning and
end of the chain.

Within this framework, the Sepehr Modbus Gateway functions as the Master, while
environmental monitoring sensors and other industrial equipment act as Slaves. Each Slave
device is assigned a unique, configurable Slave ID—typically set manually via binary
switches. This identifier enables the Master to accurately recognize and associate the data
transmitted by each device, such as temperature measurements, with the corresponding Slave.
