What is Modbus and How Does it Work?
In the Master/Slave Modbus protocol, data is transmitted in tables and only the Master device (the gateway) requests data from the Slave devices (Sepehr environmental sensors), meaning other devices cannot send data without the Master’s permission.
The most common type of this protocol is Modbus RTU, in which a single Master gateway and multiple Slave devices are connected in a network over a bus topology. In this setup, each device is linked sequentially to the two neighboring sensing or industrial equipment except for the first and last devices in the chain.
In this system, the Sepehr Modbus Gateway operates as the Master, while the environmental monitoring devices and other industrial equipment function as Slaves. Each Slave is assigned a configurable Slave ID, which can be manually set (e.g., via binary switches). This ID allows the data sent by each device, such as temperature readings, to be clearly identified and correctly matched to the right Slave by the Master.
